It was announced earlier Friday that goaltender Louis Domingue had changed agents. Quickly thereafter, the netminder was traded from the Tampa Bay Lighting to the New Jersey Devils.
The New Jersey Devils have announced that they have acquired Domingue from the Lightning in return for a conditional 2021 seventh-round pick. The return for Tampa is minimal suggesting this was merely a salary dump transaction.
Domingue, 27, has been looking to get moved out of Tampa where he might actually get a chance to play. The Devils, who have employed some of the worst goaltending in the NHL this season, will be extremely excited to have him.
Because the Lightning opted to bring in veteran Curtis McElhinney to back up starter Andrei Vasilevskiy, Domingue was the odd man out in Tampa. When the Bolts acquired Mike Condon as part of a trade that saw them shed Ryan Callahan’s contract, there was a surplus of goaltenders.
In New Jersey, veteran Cory Schneider is having one of the worst years of his career with an .847 save percentage and 4.71 GAA and young backup MacKenzie Blackwood has been marginally better with a .871 save percentage and 3.31 GAA.
