Montreal Canadiens Provide Update on Carey Price

As the playoffs inch closer and closer, the Montreal Canadiens are still without their number one goaltender in Carey Price. The 33-year-old hasn’t played since April 19, where he was forced to leave a game versus the Edmonton Oilers after a collision with Alex Chiasson.

As we know with concussions, they can be very hard to predict, and it has been no different for Price. While his collision with Chiasson looked very harmless at the time, it has forced him to miss his teams last 10 games.

Down Year

It’s no secret that prior to this injury, Price was not having a very good season. Through 25 games played he has just a 2.64 goals against average (GAA) and a .901 save percentage (SV%). Those numbers are very disappointing from a goalie like him given that the league average in SV% this season is .908.

There was no question that before Price was put on the injured reserve, Jake Allen was performing much better between the pipes for the Habs. However, he has struggled as of late and has pretty average numbers with the same 2.64 GAA and a .909 SV%. Despite the better numbers, the team seems to play much better in front of Price, as he has a 12-7-5 record while Allen sits at 11-11-4.

Without Price, the Habs have been extremely average, going just 5-5 in the games he has missed. While they are in a close race with the Winnipeg Jets for the third spot in the North Division, they have done nothing as of late to suggest they would be able to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs or even the Edmonton Oilers in the opening round of a playoff series.

Jobs on the Line

It is becoming increasingly clear that they need their number one goaltender back, and they need him back in a hurry. An early playoff exit for a team that made numerous changes and spent so much money in the offseason could spell the end of general manager Marc Bergevin’s tenure, stressing just how badly they need Price back in the crease.

Hopefully for both his and his team’s sake, Price is able to return prior to the regular season wrapping up so he is able to get a few starts in before the playoffs begin.
