According to multiple reports, New York Rangers forward Mika Zibanejad will not be able to skate Monday, when the Rangers take the ice for the first time in training camp. General manager Jeff Gorton told reporters he’s day to day and would not elaborate on the reason why he’s not skating.

News that Zibanejad will not participate in the club’s first on-ice session is not wonderful news to start the season for a team that is looking to make serious strides over their 2019-20 campaign. The Rangers have a lot of buzz heading into the 2020-21 season with Alexis Lafreniere prepared to make his NHL debut and Zibanejad returning after a huge season.

Unfortunately, he’s not the only one out for the time being as Justin Richards and netminder Keith Kinkaid are also unavailable to skate Monday. Kinkaid is also listed as day-to-day.

Zibanejad is Key to Ranger Success This Season

While the team has names like Lafreniere and Artemi Panarin ready to take on much of the Rangers offensive duties, Zibanejad, 27, is going to be a huge part of the success of the Rangers this season. He has established himself as one of the league’s most electric forwards and has two seasons left before a contract extension will be the top priority for the Rangers organization.

The Swedish pivot posted 41 goals and 75 points in 57 games last season, and his goals-per-game mark of 0.72 led the league.

Training camps for last season’s playoff teams are set to begin Sunday, and this could simply be a quarantine issue as Zibanejad just arrived a few days ago.
