Might Maple Leafs Be Talking To Minnesota About Matt Dumba?

A recent report suggests the Toronto Maple Leafs and Minnesota Wild might have begun discussions for a huge trade with defenseman Matt Dumba as the target.

We’ve talked a lot about the Toronto Maple Leafs over the past few days and it sounds like we’ll be focusing on them a lot more as rumors continue to swirl over who they might be interested in. The latest rumors include a defenseman from the Minnesota Wild.

Wild blueliner Matt Dumba has been brought up in trade talks and it sounds like, in the right deal, the Wild are willing to move him. The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta points out, Dumba could be a potential fit for the Leafs and the return could be Kasperi Kapanen.

Pagnotta suggests, however, Kapanen won’t be enough. The package might include also Cody Ceci.

Pagnotta writes:

The Wild want a top-six forward and Kapanen fits the bill, but it’s going take more than him for Minnesota’s GM Bill Guerin to move Dumba. Do the Leafs include UFA-to-be Ceci in the deal, so the Wild can flip him elsewhere, or is a separate move more likely? Somethings to keep tabs on if the Leafs don’t go the rental route.

He writes in another article on the site, “The Toronto Maple Leafs have expressed interest in Dumba in the past and could revisit the possibility now that he appears to be available.”

How Likely Is This Dumba Deal?

There will be lots of talk about the Leafs and teams who have defenseman available. For now, let’s consider this just a rumor. That said, Dumba does fit what the Leafs are looking for which is a defenseman with some term. A $6 million d-man who is locked up until 2023 would be attractive for Kyle Dubas.

And, as we said in an earlier article today, it sounds like the Maple Leafs will only move Kapaenen in a blockbuster. This would qualify as a mega-deal that would justify Toronto moving a top-six forward.
