McDavid Pots Hat Trick In Whacky Win Over Blackhawks

Connor McDavid scored three goals as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Chicago Blackhawks in a wild affair on Thursday night.

Connor McDavid now has as many hat tricks this season as Auston Matthews has goals. With his second three-goal night of this early 2022-23 NHL season, it’s clear McDavid is looking to score more and is tied for the league lead in points with teammate Leon Draisaitl and Boston Bruins’ forward David Pastrnak with 15. Meanwhile, Matthews scored his 2nd goal of the season on Thursday and fans are wondering if his marker against the Sharks in a 4-3 loss will get him going.

The Matthews comparison isn’t relevant to the Oilers’ game versus the Blackhawks. But, because these two players will be pitted against one another all season long when it comes to production, fans of the Oilers are having a field day with the numbers, something they have the luxury of doing after Edmonton pulled out a 6-5 win over Chicago in one of the strangest games of the season thus far.

McDavid scores on Blackhawks

A wild shootout that went back and forth and was won in the last 35 seconds by Draisaitl, there were 17 penalties between the two teams with the Oilers going 3-for-7 and the Blackhawks 2-10. That was the difference in a game that was terribly officiated by most accounts and fewer than five minutes in the second period was played at five-vs-five. Evander Kane was on the officials’ radar after getting a double-minor for crosschecking and he later had a goal called back, that was ruled no goal on the ice after the play was stopped, but was clearly pointed in as a goal by the on-ice official during the play. That sequence, followed by an unsuccessful challenge by the Oilers might not have been even the strangest thing on the ice that night.

Either way, the Oilers worked their way to a 5-3 record on the season, got their second-straight win on the road, and snapped the Blackhawks’ winning streak at four games. They’ll play Calgary next on Saturday, October 29th, and McDavid and Draisaitil will try to stay hot.

Fun Fact: The Oilers are 25-0-0 when McDavid has four points in a game. The fact that there are 25 games in which he’s done that is just a phenomenal feat. Needless to say, his injury scare against Pittsburgh isn’t affecting him in the slightest.
