According to a couple of reports, the Columbus Blue Jackets and Max Domi have reached terms on extension that will officially add the forward to the Blue Jackets roster after a deal that sent Domi to the team from the Montreal Canadiens at the NHL Draft.
Update: Friedman reports deal is done: 2 years at $5.3 million per season.
Montreal shipped Domi, along with a third-round pick to the Blue Jackets on Tuesday in exchange for Josh Anderson. And, while Anderson says he’s open to signing with the Canadiens is the numbers are right, it appears the Blue Jackets aren’t wasting any time in getting a deal done with a player they hope will be a top-six center for them for many years to come.
Renaud Lavoie is reporting that his sources suggest a deal is going to come in around $5 million of Domi. If he turns out to be the player they’re hoping he’ll be and based on upon his performance in the past two seasons, that’s a good deal.
Some are wondering what the term will be. Speculation is that it might be a short-term deal (2 years), which could explain the lower yearly salary. That said, the potential downside here, is that rumored two-year deal would take him right to UFA eligibility.
When the numbers finally come in, it will be interesting to see how Canadiens fans react to this news. The numbers seem reasonable for the Blue Jackets, but that pending free agency part leaves a little uncertainty with the deal.
Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin said during a video conference after the first round of the NHL Draft Tuesday night that the trade fills a need for both teams.
