Matthew Knies Out with Mystery Issue as Maple Leafs’ Injury List Grows
Matthew Knies is out with a lower-body injury, adding to a growing Maple Leafs injury list now at seven regulars.
The Toronto Maple Leafs will be down yet another key piece tonight, as forward Matthew Knies has been ruled out with a lower-body injury. The announcement came just hours before puck drop, catching many off guard. Sammy Blais will be added to the lineup.
Knies showed no visible signs of injury during Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks and had fully participated in practices leading into tonight’s matchup.
His absence adds to Toronto’s staggering list of injured regulars. The Leafs are now missing seven core players: Auston Matthews, Nicolas Roy, Scott Laughton, Chris Tanev, Brandon Carlo, Anthony Stolarz, and now Knies. It’s a brutal stretch for a team already struggling to find lineup consistency.
The Leafs have not provided any details on how Knies was injured or when it may have occurred, only noting that he is considered day-to-day. With Toronto’s depth being tested more than at any point this season, the team will need contributions from its secondary players to stay competitive.

For now, all eyes will be on updates in the coming days as the Leafs look for any positive news on a growing injury front. The hope is that the Maple Leafs can find some help internally. GM Brad Treliving said at his media conference on Tuesday morning, “We’re going through injuries, but you know what? Everyone goes through injury. So, you look around the league, there are good teams that have injuries. So, to me, that’s a losing mentality. I’ve been in this game a long time, I’ve yet to have a meeting with a player that says ‘you know what? Give me less opportunity’. Everybody wants more opportunity. Everybody wants a bigger role.”
Matthews will miss at least two more games as he continues recovering from his Nov. 11 injury, though he resumed skating today. Chris Tanev will be re-evaluated in one to two weeks, and Nicolas Roy is out for a few games.
