It’s the question that never seems to completely go away: Are the Toronto Maple Leafs still thinking about trading Matthew Knies? The answer seems to be that they aren’t shopping the forward, but they haven’t ruled it out either. At least, that’s the opinion of one NHL insider who thinks a deal is still possible.
According to TSN and NHL insider Darren Dreger, chatter remains about Knies’ future in Toronto and whether he’s the piece the organization needs to to trade to improve its roster. A player without trade protection, Knies’ name came up a lot this offseason, a ripple effect from rumored trade discussions at the NHL Entry Draft. Dreger notes, “Matthew Knies’ name continues to be brought up in trade talks, however, it’s not something the Maple Leafs have “on the front burner.”

Dreger adds, “I don’t believe for a second that the Maple Leafs are shopping Matthew Knies. I just think that it’s conversations that managers would have had at the trade deadline or in the offseason, and they’re circling back. It’s not front-burner stuff, but maybe it develops as the season unfolds.”
Is a Knies Trade Really Still A Storyline?
Some fans were quick to say that Dreger might be trying to keep an old narrative alive for the sake of finding content or stirring up the fan base. Then again, there’s been some talk about Knies’ first impressions of new head coach Jim Hiller. Hiller asked about the forward’s preseason showing and, after two games, said there’s more left in Knies’ game than what he’s shown. “I thought he was better tonight. He wasn’t that dangerous. I think he only ended up with one shot on goal. Took one to the net. So I think this has been okay. I wouldn’t say strongly one way or the other. I think there’s more there for sure.”
Would the Maple Leafs make a move if the right offer came along? Dreger seems to think the organization wouldn’t close the door to having those conversations. GM John Chayka isn’t out seeking a deal, but he’s not afraid to consider one.
As for who the Leafs would consider, that’s unclear. The initial belief was that the Montreal Canadiens were interested. They’re also being linked to Kirill Marchenko in Columbus. Those Canadiens and Maple Leafs rumors have quieted down.
Still, there would be interest. Knies is locked into a team-friendly deal until 2031. At $7.75 million per season, he’s the kind of player who could fit on several NHL rosters.
