Marner Extension Talks Could Push Him to Peek at Free Agency

Chris Johnston of TSN is reporting no contract offers have been made to Mitch Marner and extension talk delays could push him to free agency.

As the Toronto Maple Leafs work through contract discussions with Mitch Marner, it’s being reported that the back-and-forth discussions haven’t actually led to a contract offer. According to Chris Johnston of TSN, the longer negotiations drag on, the more likely Marner is to test the free-agent market when his current deal expires.

While a guest on TSN’s First Up, Johnston explained that ongoing talks with Marner’s reps are a good thing. The fact no one seems to be getting anywhere might not be. There has been no exchanging of official offers, which leaves the door open for the 27-year-old winger to see what’s out there when July 1 and NHL free agency approaches.

When asked if he believes that the Leafs will come to terms with either player this season, Johnston responded that no big decisions have been made. “It’s kind of a process that’s playing out.” He added, “If you get close enough to July 1, you might want to take a peek.” Johnston says there’s a world that an in-season deal could happen, but he doesn’t get any sense anything is imminent.

Marner would be an obvious target for several teams if he makes it to market. He’s having a fantastic season, and he stepped up in the absence of Auston Matthews, showing how valuable he can be and that he can potentially lead a team as its top star. He regularly produces offense but is also reliable defensively. That combination makes him an elite talent, and potential suitors will step up with big offers.

Marner’s Situation Compared to Leafs Extension Talks with John Tavares

Johnston also noted that Marner’s situation is different than that of former captain John Tavares. Tavares has expressed a clear desire to remain in Toronto, even though he’s aware he’ll have to take a haircut on his next deal to stick around. Tavares’ extension talks are expected to be more straightforward. He knows what his situation is and he’s the one who is excluding most of the other options available to him.

When asked if Tavares might sign a deferred contract, Johnston suggested his deal might be one that could include deferred money, but that might depend on the length of that deal. It depends on what works for Tavares.

Johnston believes there is still time for the Maple Leafs to reach agreements with both players. When he cautions that delays could lead to Marner seeing what’s available to him elsewhere, he’s not suggesting he believes that will happen. This report suggests instead that the longer this takes, the less likely Marner’s extension becomes a given.
