Maple Leafs Trade Sam Ersson Rights to Ottawa for Fifth-Round Pick
Toronto Maple Leafs have traded the rights to RFA goaltender Samuel Ersson to the Ottawa Senators for 5th-round pick.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded the rights to RFA goaltender Samuel Ersson to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round selection.
The move is largely a housekeeping transaction.
New Maple Leafs GM John Chayka was not expected to qualify Ersson anyway, making the fifth-round pick a reasonable return for a player who was unlikely to factor into Toronto’s plans. Rather than simply letting his rights lapse, the Leafs squeezed a draft asset out of the situation.
For Ottawa, Ersson adds depth to their goaltending pipeline. The Swedish netminder spent time with the Philadelphia Flyers organization before his rights landed in Toronto.
The pick gives the Maple Leafs nine selections in the 2027 draft, continuing to build out their prospect pool under Chayka’s rebuilding approach.
Ersson, 26, is scheduled to be a restricted free agent on July 1. He spent each of the past four seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers and played a career-high 51 games in 2023-24. In 2025-26, Ersson appeared in 33 games for the Flyers, posting a 14-11-5 record with a 3.12 GAA.
