Maple Leafs Trade for Alex Galchenyuk from Carolina Hurricanes

Alex Galchenyuk has wound up with the Toronto Maple Leafs after a trade Monday afternoon from the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have picked up Alex Galchenyuk from the Carolina Hurricanes for two players – Yegor Korshkov and David Warsofsky. It’s an interesting move because Galchenyuk was waived Sunday after the Hurricanes picked him up from the Ottawa Senators; however, no team claimed him.

Move Makes Sense for the Maple Leafs

The move does make sense for the Maple Leafs for two reasons. First, his salary-cap implications aren’t onerous because he comes with a cap hit of $1,050,000. It would seem easy enough to move that kind of money even for the Maple Leafs. Second, because Galchenyuk still is in Canada he won’t be required to quarantine for 14-days before he joins the Maple Leafs.

Galchenyuk Has Had a 30-Goal Season

The 27-year-old Galchenyuk’s stock has fallen during the past few seasons. However, at one time he was thought to have a high-end value. He actually had a 30-goal season in 2015-16 for the Montreal Canadiens (30 goals and 26 assists for 56 points in 82 games). So he’s experienced some success in the past.

The Maple Leafs will be Galchenyuk’s seventh NHL team. He spent the first six years of his NHL career with the Canadiens after they selected him third overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He’s totaled 136 goals and 185 assists over 557 career games in the NHL.

Galchenyuk has scored a goal in eight games this season in minimum time on the ice. He’s a flyer, just like Jimmy Vesey. However, he could be good in a new home. Certainly Maple Leafs will see soon enough.
