Maple Leafs To Get Fleeced in Trade For Netminder?

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in dire need of a backup goaltender and some NHL insiders believe they may get fleeced in trade trying to acquire one.

A recent article by Rory Boylen of Sportsnet addressed the dire need for the Toronto Maple Leafs to find a solution in goal. The ever-pressing need for a solid backup in Toronto has plagued the team this season and Boylen points out 10 possible options the Maple Leafs might want to consider.

Not having won a single back-to-back game yet this season, Brian Burke also called the concern that thing that could make or break the Maple Leafs’ playoff hopes.

Among the names listed, Boylen includes names like Ryan Miller, Casey DeSmith, Garret Sparks, Tristan Jarry, Jack Campbell, and Collin Delia. Most interesting about this is that none of these names should cost the Maple Leafs and arm and a leg to acquire, yet it might.

Burke has noted that the Maple Leafs will most likely need to give up a lot in return for goaltending help, partly because every team knows how badly the Maple Leafs need the help and partly because the Maple Leafs can’t expect to win regularly without improving their situation. Burke explained, “It’s beyond price. You’re going to have to overpay. And I would do that — and if Kyle does that I will not criticize him.”

Burke also suggested to the Sportsnet 590 The Fan’s Good Show. “If he [Dubas] has to give up a second-round pick or a good kid to solve this issue… because this is their Achilles heel. This is a fatal flaw for this team making the playoffs, if they don’t address this.”

Who Will Take Advantage of Maple Leafs?

Kyle Dubas may have his hands tied here and if an opposing GM with a backup available gets the sense there might be an opportunity here. It’s a legitimate question as to who will be the first to pick up the phone and give Dubas a call. With a small cap window to make a move and 30 other GM’s that know his hands are somewhat tied, it will be all that Dubas can do not to get taken to the cleaners.
