Maple Leafs Looking to Bolster Their Forward Group

The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly looking to add a depth forward before the NHL Trade Deadline. Who are they targeting?

According to Darren Dreger of TSN, the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to bolster their forward group before the NHL Trade Deadline this season. He notes that a couple of weeks ago, they weren’t certain that’s what they would do, but now, they are looking to add a bit of depth, especially considering their recent string of wins.

The Leafs are coming off of two big victories against an offensive group in the Edmonton Oilers. Toronto played some excellent shutdown defense in both games, keeping Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl (along with everyone else) off the scoreboard. The Leafs are separating themselves from the pack in the NHL standings but, the Leafs could use a bit of help in the middle of their lineup.

There’s been speculation about the Leafs being interested in Mikael Granlund of the Nashville Predators and Dreger wonders if there’s a fit there, especially if the Predators are willing to retain some salary in a deal. Dreger says:

“Look, Toronto has the prospects, and if necessary have the draft picks to make something like that happen. As long as the Leafs continue to win, then I know Dubas is going to try and bolster the group up front.”

The Leafs Will Be Buyers

With the way Toronto is playing, there’s no doubt they’ll be buyers at this year’s deadline. The uncertainty will come when looking at what they can afford to do and finding a team willing to work with them financially to make things happen.

The Leafs don’t have a ton of cap space but they can add a lot with just a little if they find the right trade partner(s).
