Maple Leafs Have Reportedly Soured on Jack Campbell

New reports suggest the slow contract talks between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Jack Campbell are because they’ve soured on him.

According to Sportsnet insiders Nick Kypreos and Elliotte Friedman, something strange is going on between the Toronto Maple Leafs and goaltender Jack Campbell. Kypreos tweeted on Monday, “Still no serious NHL contract talks between Jack Campbell and the MapleLeafs. Are they even interested in resigning Jack at any price?” He had Friedman on his show to talk about it and both admitted they’re having a hard time wrapping their heads around where things went off the rails.

At this point, it feels like there’s small chance a deal still gets done between the two sides, but that it’s more like a split is coming and that Campbell will leave the Maple Leafs and join either the Edmonton Oilers or New Jersey Devils in free agency. What’s so odd about all of this is that Kypreos has heard that an offer from the Maple Leafs is non-existent.

Friedman writes that there has been one offer a long time ago, but nothing since and it’s almost as if the Maple Leafs have already moved on. Friedman said, “It’s been really slow on the Jack Campbell front.” He added that it is unlike some of the pending UFA cases he is watching. For example, Filip Forsberg is grinding with the Predators towards a result. Kris Letang is doing the same in Pittsburgh and there is a belief both of those deals will eventually get done. Not so much with Campbell. He notes, “This Campbell one hasn’t seemed like it’s moved very far.”

Kypreos kind of cut Friedman off and added that his sources say not even one offer has been made to the goaltender. When asked why, Kypreos thinks it’s that the Leafs have soured on him. He didn’t say if that was because of his play or because of the lack of contract talks, but it is believed the Leafs will target someone else.

There are a few names the Leafs could go after with Darcy Kuemper, Marc-Andre Fluery, Ville Husso and Matt Murray being names that are already out there in connection with Toronto. Could Kyle Dubas have something else up his sleeve? He’s the type of GM that finds a player when the rest of the world didn’t think that person was on the market. You never know.
