Maple Leafs Scratching Fraser Minten Before Likely Goodbye
Fraser Minten, a promising Maple Leafs rookie will sit and watch as the team recalibrates for an important decision.
19-year-old Fraser Minten has emerged as a remarkable prospect for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season. He came into camp and lit the world on fire, forcing Maple Leafs’ coach Sheldon Keefe and GM Brad Treliving to put him on the opening night roster. But, with the regular season underway, the reality of where Minten is as an NHL player is setting in.
After four games where Minten logged an average of 11 minutes and 26 seconds of ice time without registering any points, he was made a healthy scratch. And, with nine games allowed before the Leafs are forced to determine his fate, it makes sense to have him sit some more. The idea is to stretch out his stay, knowing any games he does get will be invaluable, even if he’s just watching.
Keefe announced that the young talent would be sitting the upcoming game against the Washington Capitals. Emphasizing that this decision was an opportunity for Minten to “step back and take a breath”, he will soak up still being part of the NHL team.
In a few days, things will change. Speculation arises regarding Minten’s future with the Maple Leafs and many believe a move back to Kamloops is coming. That move was possibly part of the plan all along. It’s probably the right move, but the Leafs aren’t quite ready to make it yet. Keefe said, “We are just taking it a day at a time at this point. He is not going to play tomorrow. We will see how it goes from there.”
The Move to Keep Minen Made Sense
It was a strategic decision to integrate Minten into the Leafs’ training camp alongside seasoned NHL players and coaches, allowing him to learn and grow in a professional environment. Undoubtedly, it’s a ton to take in over just a few weeks. Still, it’s all good, even if his NHL road ends here, for now. These will be lessons he can take back with him, before getting another look some time down the line.

There is no need to rush his development. Clearly, he’s not ready to be an impact player on a nightly basis, so why try to fit a square peg into a round hole?
Is There A Chance He Sticks?
The likelihood he stays in Toronto much longer is slim. Minten’s immediate role with the Maple Leafs remains uncertain, meaning, he might not get another game. If so, he will likely play a significant part in Canada’s world junior team—an opportunity that highlights his potential on the international stage. That experience will also be invaluable, especially considering he’s taking with him his experience in the NHL.
As the Leafs take Minten’s progression “one day at a time,” fans eagerly await his return, knowing that this talented rookie holds a promising future on a team that will surely need him when he’s ready.
