Maple Leafs Fans Split in Auston Matthews’ Return to Toronto After Olympics

There have been a lot of differing opinions about Auston Matthews over the last week, and that was on full display on Saturday night in Toronto.

In his first home game since captaining Team USA to Olympic Gold, Matthews and his Swedish Maple Leaf teammates, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and William Nylander, were honored with a tribute for their accomplishments, and, unsurprisingly, the latter two received a much warmer welcome back.

Matthews’ portion of the salute was met with a more mixed reaction, as tamed cheers along with some boos were scattered throughout the Scotiabank Arena crowd.

The 28-year-old had a very solid tournament, producing seven points (three goals, four assists) in six games en route to winning Gold. He’ll be remembered most for his defensive masterclass in the final, stymying Team Canada’s superstars—something nobody else in the Olympics was able to do.

Matthews knew his return wouldn’t come with a typical warm welcome given the on- and off-ice circumstances, and he acknowledged that when speaking to the media pregame: “I don’t know. We’ve got great fans, we’ve got passionate fans. I’m just focused on tonight’s game, getting ready for that, doing whatever I can to help our team win for a game that we desperately need.”

It’s been a difficult situation for all of the American players upon returning to their NHL teams, though nobody can attest to that more than Matthews, captain of the Maple Leafs, and Brady Tkachuk, captain of the Ottawa Senators, who both took down their teams’ home country in the gold medal game.

Toronto and Ottawa now turn to finishing out a pivotal Atlantic Division game, where the loser will face the reality that their season is all but over, while the winner will at least keep themselves alive, albeit still facing an uphill climb to make the playoffs.
