Los Angeles Kings Sign Alex Iafallo to Four-Year Extension

The Los Angeles Kings are trying to re-sign Alex Iafallo before determining whether or not they need to trade him on Monday.

There is a chance the Los Angeles Kings get a deal done with pending UFA Alex Iafallo before Monday’s trade deadline comes to a close. If not, a deal could take place last minute, but both sides are hoping to get the details of an extension worked out.

** Update: Iafallo is on the ice so he hasn’t signed the deal yet, but indeed has agreed to terms on 4-year extension with Kings. He’s off the trade market. The deal is worth $16 million.

Pierre LeBrun writes: “Discussions went late into the night between the Kings and Alex Iafallo’s camp. Still no resolution as of this morning. Going to be interesting to see where that goes…” He updated the story to add, “Kings and Alex Iafallo closing the gap… things looking positive for a potential contract extension. Still work to be done on it, but progress has been made.”

A strong shooter with strong defensive metrics, the risk for the Kings is overpaying for Iafallo versus getting the best value for him if a team is willing to overpay a little at the deadline. Dan Rosen writes:

Iafallo should be an intriguing player on the market for a lot of teams looking for top-9 forward depth. He can score, play up and down the lineup, play in front of the net, play power play, PK, 3-on-3. Think of Blake Coleman and his impact with the Lightning, but maybe bigger.

He’s exactly player who is much better than a lot of fans think. He’s got 11 goals 25 points in 39 games for the Kings and to have a winger like him on 3rd line would be a big boost for a lot of teams. It could be that franchises are waiting to see what comes out of the Kings and Iafallo’s talks before they make other moves on Monday.
