By all accounts, the Leafs would love a way to bring back Mikheyev, but from a cap perspective it simply doesn’t appear to be possible. The 27-year-old is in for a significant pay raise from last seasons $1.645 million deal, as he had career highs with 21 goals and 32 points over 53 outings in 2021-22. He kept up his productivity in the playoffs as well with two goals and four points in seven contests.

As first reported by Elliotte Friedman on Thursday morning, the Leafs have informed teams that Mikheyev’s rights are up for grabs. What this means is that any team interested in signing him could make a deal for him ahead of free agency, as they would then have a chance to discuss a deal with him before he officially becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 13.

As far as what the Leafs may get in return, it won’t be much. Generally, teams trading players rights in this fashion results in a late-round pick headed the other way. With that said, any return is better than nothing for a player that they have no intention of keeping around.
