Leafs Rookie Gavin McKenna Breaks Through — Thanks to the Most Unexpected Ritual Yet
Gavin McKenna finally breaks through for the Maple Leafs, and the unexpected ritual behind his breakout has fans talking.
Gavin McKenna had his first big moment as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Fans and media have been waiting to see what the 18‑year‑old could do, and on Tuesday night, he delivered. McKenna ripped home a beautiful shot — his first NHL goal — after picking up his first career point earlier in the game with an assist.
The moment came in his fourth NHL game, a come‑from‑behind victory for the Maple Leafs, making it all the more memorable. But was there a reason this game felt different? What McKenna says sparked his breakout might surprise people.
Optional Skates
Much has been made lately about McKenna missing optional skates. The optics of an 18‑year‑old rookie skipping them aren’t great, but it’s still early in the season. The Leafs have said they want to “slow play” him, and this may be part of that plan. Still, the optics haven’t helped anyone involved.
Today was different. McKenna did attend the optional morning skate — something quickly posted all over social media. It was a good sign, and McKenna even joked about his “welcome to the NHL moment,” having a little fun with the media:
“Just how hard it is. You come in, you believe in yourself, and I still believe in myself, but… especially in the Toronto media, with putting up 0 points in 3 games, I think you hear about it.”
McKenna is already feeling the pressure of the Toronto market, which isn’t ideal for a young player. But hopefully this goal can take some weight off his shoulders. His teammates seem to think so, predicting he could go on a tear now that he has his first. Matthews had this to say about McKenna after the game:
“I think you’re going to see him go on a tear now with the weight lifted off his shoulder.”
A Surprise Reason For Success?
There might be another reason McKenna had his breakout night. Some players rely on superstitions, others change their stick or tape job — meanwhile, McKenna mentioned that he and Auston Matthews had a sleepover on Sunday. Could that really be the spark?
McKenna joked:
“Might have to have weekly sleepovers.”
He’s clearly having fun with it, but it’s interesting to see what helps or hinders players in today’s NHL. Every player has their own routine. Some nap, others eat the same pregame meal. Some superstitions seem strange to fans, but players swear by them.
It’s also great to see McKenna bonding with his captain. Matthews has been through the same pressures McKenna is facing — even though Matthews started his career with a four‑goal debut. Having Matthews’ presence and support will only help McKenna grow.

McKenna On A Roll
Hopefully this game is a sign of things to come. McKenna was already feeling immense pressure from fans and media, and every skate he attends — or misses — is going to be magnified. If the weight of the city was on him after only three games, you have to wonder how he’ll handle similar stretches in the future.
But this is a great start, and one he can build on. His shot is a legitimate weapon, and he should use it more often. Too many times early in the season, McKenna passed up prime shooting opportunities to force a pass to a teammate who wasn’t ready.
The kid has all the talent in the world. With this weight off his shoulders, he should be able to play a calmer, more confident game — and maybe stop putting so much pressure on himself. In the end, McKenna needs to keep shooting the puck. His goal tonight was an electric moment for the city, and one everyone had been waiting to see.
