Latest Canucks Trade Deadline Talk: Dermott, Miller, Boeser, Schenn
What are the Vancouver Canucks up to heading into Monday’s NHL Trade Deadline? What is the fate for Miller, Boeser and others?
The Vancouver Canucks are going to wait until Monday morning — just hours after they either win or lose their second of a back-to-back against the Calgary Flames — to determine whether they are sellers or not at this year’s NHL Trade Deadline. The likelihood is that they will be, but Jim Rutherford and Patrick Allvin want to make sure this season is a write-off before selling the farm.
That hasn’t stopped the team from making a couple of minor moves, sending Travis Hamonic to the Ottawa Senators, and dumping $3 million in the process — for a third-round pick. They then used a third to land Travis Dermott from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

What Else Does Vancouver Have Going On?
As per a report by Jeff Marek on the 32 Thoughts segment of Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday, the Canucks wanted to see how they fared in their games against Calgary before making final decisions on players like Brock Boeser, Conor Garland, J.T. Miller and Luke Schenn. If they lose two in a row versus the Flames, all could be moved. Of the four, Miller is the least likely to go.
He noted, “It sounds like this weekend is going to dictate what the Canucks do at the deadline. Two names we hear most are Boeser and Garland. No inclination to trade JT Miller.”
The Canucks are leaning towards keeping Miller and possibly trying to extend him on a new contract. The club could look at an offseason trade and see if the return is enough to warrant a move but they like the player and all things being equal, would prefer to keep him.

One team rumored to be in on Conor Garland is the Los Angeles Kings. Elliotte Friedman said he believed the Kings had been in touch frequently and he is a possibility before Monday as LA has been rather quiet.
Defenseman Luke Schenn is attracting interest as a depth defenseman. The key for him is that he’d like to be in a location where he has a chance to play. As a seventh, he’s been in a spot where he’s a depth option for a contending club, but there are plenty of teams looking. The Toronto Maple Leafs were believed to be one of them, but with the addition of Mark Giordano on Sunday, that likely rules them out.
Other names that could go are Tyler Motte and Jaroslav Halak.
Brock Boeser The Most Interesting Name
What happens with Boeser is still anyone’s guess. There was talk the Canucks were open to moving Miller. When that narrative shifted, Boeser’s name came up because he’s due a big qualifying offer next season and the Canucks aren’t sure they want to go there. Could he be moved? It might be one of the surprise deals of the deadline if it happens.
The Washington Capitals were a team that got connected to Boeser talk and someone like the Boston Bruins could go there. The New York Rangers are a team looking for players with term, but it’s not likely they kick around too much here because they have long-term salary cap concerns and they can’t overpay for anyone right now.
The $7.5-million qualifying offer Boeser is due as an RFA is an issue for teams. It’s certainly a non-starter for the Canucks. If he is moved, it could happen this summer.
