Landeskog and Avs Not Close On Extension, Johnson Waives No-Move

Darren Dreger says the Colorado Avalanche and Gabriel Landeskog have a long way to go and aren’t close on a contract extension.

Darren Dreger is reporting that the Colorado Avalanche and Gabriel Landeskog have a long way to go before they are even in the same ballpark on a contract extension for the pending unrestricted free agent.

Dreger said, It’s hard to visualizing the Avalanche going into next season without their captain but the two sides “are not even close in their negotiations.” Dreger adds, “The position of the Colorado Avalanche is going to have to change significantly, according to sources, or, absolutely Gabe Landeskog will go to market.

Dreger does concede that the process is still in the early stages but the news here is that things aren’t looking good in the initial goings of their talks.

There are a number of teams likely interested and willing to make a sizeable offer to Landeskog should he hit the open market. The St. Louis Blues are rumored to be among them reports NHL.com’s Lou Korac. If he shakes loose, they are preparing to give a “full pitch effort” to see if he’ll come to St. Louis. The Blues have cap space, and would have even more if they were able to trade Vladimir Tarasenko.

The Avalanche captain scored 52 points (20 goals, 32 assists) in 54 games this past season. He he has scored at least 20 goals in eight of his 10 NHL seasons and at least 50 points in his previous seven. He’s highly consistent and he plays regular minutes (19:57) for the Avs behind only center Nathan MacKinnon (20:22). He’s physical, he can win faceoffs (56.6 percent) and he’s still young (28 years old).

To this point in his career, he’s scored 512 points (218 goals, 294 assists) in 687 regular-season games with the Avalanche, which is the only team he’s ever known in the NHL.

It would be odd to see him in another sweater, but the Avalanche have a ton of business to get done and can only afford so much when they know some other big names — Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon — are going to require big investments.

Avs Already Working on Clearing Cap Space

Erik Johnson has told the Avs he’s willing to waive his no-move for the NHL Expansion Draft. This is big news for the Avalanche in terms of their cap flexibility and it allows them to protect all three of their top defenseman — Makar, Samuel Girard and Devon Toewes.

That said, the Avs still have to decide if they’ll protect Ryan Graves and go with protecting eight skaters, or do you leave Graves exposed? If you leave Graves exposed, there’s no guarantee Seattle takes Johnson and his $6 million cap hit.
