John Tavares Involved in Scary Collision During Leafs vs. Canadiens Game

Toronto Maple Leafs’ John Tavares was involved in a collision on the ice with Corey Perry. He was stretchered off the ice.

In an heart-stopping and horrifying moment, John Tavares was involved in a collision on the ice with Corey Perry and medical staff needed to stretcher out the star center who gave a thumbs up after a scary head injury. There’s no update on the condition of Tavares, only that he’s been to a local hospital and hope is that he’ll be alright.

Ben Chiarot laid in the initial hit with Tavares which sent the player into a bit of tailspin and down on the ice. Just as he was rotating, Perry skated by and couldn’t get out the way in time. Perry’s knee caught Tavares directly in the head and the Maple Leafs’ forward didn’t move. Training staff came out immediately to tend to Tavares and GM Kyle Dubas raced down from his seat in the executive box to check on his player.

The Maple Leafs and Canadiens showed their support for John Tavares but there was also some confusion if the hit was intentional or could have been avoided. Nick Foligno warned Perry that he was coming for him while the medical staff was attending to Tavares. When play resumed, Perry agreed to a fight and that will hopefully be the end of it.

While Foligno might have felt it was part of the code to get back at Perry, this was clearly not an incident where Perry tried to injure Tavares. The play unfolded so quickly and Perry wasn’t even focused on Tavares. It would have been nearly impossible to avoid the collision, and Perry tried.

The Maple Leafs players talked during the break that the only thing they could do was try to win the game for Tavares. The Montreal Canadiens also released a statement on their Twitter account hoping that the player is ok.

We’ll have more information as it becomes available. If there are updates on Tavares’ condition, we’ll be sure to provide the information.

Perry did not deserve the fight. This was accidental…it happened so fast Perry tried to avoid the collision. I pray John Travaras will be ok.
