Jeff Petry Informed Canadiens are Trying to Trade Him

The Montreal Canadiens have told Jeff Petry that the organization is trying to trade the veteran and expensive defenseman.

With expected change coming to the Montreal Canadiens roster, players can see the writing on the wall and know their futures with the organization is unclear. For a player like Jeff Petry, things are more than unclear. According to a new report, he already knows the team is trying to move him as he’s been advised the franchise is looking for a trade partner and will pull the trigger on a deal if one presents itself.

As per an article by Guillaume Lefrancois in La Presse, new Canadiens’ general manager Kent Hughes has spoken with Petry and advised him that the team will look to trade the blueliner if possible. With a $6.25 million per season salary cap hit three seasons still remaining on his current deal after this season, moving him won’t be easy. That said, the Canadiens are going to try and Petry was made aware of the Canadiens’ efforts.

Petry has not formally asked for a trade and it doesn’t sound like he’s actively looking to be moved, but the Canadiens know he’s making too much money, the team isn’t in a position to benefit from his contract or level of experience and he likely won’t be a part of the roster when the franchise puts together the team they want to move forward with. Hughes being a former player agent likely thought it best to keep his player in the loop.

The article quotes Hughes told the player:

“… we are aware of what is happening in your life. This is not the situation to play. At the same time, you are a part of this team. If there’s a chance it will work out on both sides to trade you, we’ll trade you. But until this situation arises, you are part of the Canadiens and you have to do your best.”

Among the other names the Canadiens will try to move, Ben Chiarot is the most likely. There will also be chatter surrounding Tyler Toffoli, Brendan Gallagher and Artturi Lehkonen.
