Jack Hughes Fires Back at Criticism Over Health and Play

Jack Hughes has silenced his critics on and off the ice at the Olympics.

Jack Hughes has taken quite a bit of flak over the last year. From a poor showing at the 4 Nations Face-Off, to another season-ending shoulder injury, to an injury-plagued 2025–26 campaign with the Devils falling far out of playoff contention, it hasn’t been easy for the superstar center.

He’s faced criticism for his play at times, his inability to stay healthy, and even his leadership came into question when he sat out New Jersey’s final few games before heading to the Olympics. There’s no doubt Hughes has heard it all, and he appears to have used it as motivation with the world watching on the international stage.

After another productive game in the Americans’ 6–2 semifinal win over Slovakia, Hughes was asked about his play and didn’t shy away from it, stating that he loves where his game is at and has for quite some time, despite what others might say.

Hughes said:

“I’ve felt all the way back the last bunch of years. I don’t know, I’ve had a lot of injuries, but I’m a hockey player. I think I’ve been playing well. I know everyone doesn’t watch the Devils every single night, but I love where I’m at, and I’ve always believed in myself. I know the player I am,”

The 25-year-old has tallied 36 points (12 goals, 24 assists) across 36 games for the Devils this season, and has been even better at the Olympics, producing six points (three goals, three assists) in five games.

Hughes’ injury history is troubling — there’s no question about it — but what the last two weeks have shown is that when healthy and feeling it, there are very few players in the world as talented or capable of breaking a game open.

He’s arguably been Team USA’s best player, and head coach Mike Sullivan has deservedly given him more opportunities after he began the tournament on the fourth line. Team Canada will have its hands full trying to contain him in the gold medal game on Sunday.

Many around the hockey world had begun to sour on Hughes — and understandably so. Now in year seven of his career, the same issues have continued to hold him back. That said, the upside that’s still there is tantalizing, and it’s why New Jersey remains committed to building around him.
