Jack Eichel Scheduled for Season-Ending Surgery

Jack Eichel will miss the rest of the 2020-21 NHL season, he’s going to be having surgery to repair a neck injury.

As per a report earlier on Wednesday and then confirmed by the Buffalo Sabres organization, Jack Eichel is done fo the 2020-21 NHL season. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman writes, “Expecting an update today on Jack Eichel. Word is BUF captain needs surgery and will get it done soon, so he can begin training in preparation for next season. He’ll miss the remainder of this year.”

There was an official announcement made by the organization as well that Eichel won’t be back this season. He’s been battling through a neck injury and while initial thoughts were that he might be able to rehab the issue, that’s not the case now and the team has scheduled him to undergo surgery and the hope is he will be ready for next season.

The club announced on Wednesday that they expect him to make a full recovery from a herniated disc in his neck and be ready to go by opening night 2021-22. He hasn’t played in a game since March 7th.

What’s Next For Eichel?

There could be trade talk while he’s out rehabbing from surgery. The Sabres dismantled the team at this year’s NHL Trade Deadline by moving Taylor Hall, Curtis Lazar, Brandon Montour and Eric Staal and there could be additional moves made in the offseason.

There are rumors that teams like the Calgary Flames and New York Rangers could take a look at Eichel this summer. At the very least, they’ll probably check into how his recovery is going.

If Eichel returns to Buffalo, it will be interesting to see how long he’s eager to stay put. The team has been abysmal this season, it might not be great next season and, at some point, he’s going to want to be in a situation where the future looks bright.

In 21 games this season, the 24-year-old Eichel scored two goals and record 16 assists.

Don’t be too quick to shuffle Jack out of Buffalo ! With most of the younger guys beginning to show maturity and progress under Donato, he’ d be foolish to want out now and Adams would be a fool to try and trade him! Jack is the perfect guy to continue to build this team around ! Shalom !
