Islanders Cash In on Long-Time Target in Maccelli Gamble

The Islanders interest in Maccelli wasn’t new—they’ve liked him for a long time and finally got him at a bargain price.

What’s interesting about the Matias Maccelli situation isn’t just that the New York Islanders signed him today. The fact is that their interest in him isn’t really new. According to Sportsnet, New York has inked Maccelli today for one year at $2.25 million. They’ve been interested in him for quite a while.

Apparently, the Islanders had built an internal list, and Maccelli was on it. The interesting part is that he was on that list a long time ago, and when the Maple Leafs didn’t make him a $4 million qualifying offer, they signed him for about half that amount. But long before that, Islander scouts and management filed his name away as a “fit” for their system.

Maccelli Fits What the Islanders Wanted

And Maccelli, at his best, fits a very specific kind of Islander player. He’s a playmaker first. A guy who sees the ice a little differently. When he’s confident, he can run offence from the perimeter, make clean passes through traffic, and help lift slower, grinding lines into something more dangerous. That’s the kind of skill set the Islanders have traditionally lacked when their offence goes quiet. So it makes sense that his name would have been on their radar early.

The other part of this is timing. New York has been stuck in that middle ground for a while. They are not rebuilding, but not quite a contender. Instead, they are just trying to stay relevant in a very tight Eastern Conference race. Teams in that position are always looking for one thing: someone who can change the feel of a game without requiring a full roster reset. That’s where Maccelli comes in.

Maccelli Seems Like a Bit of a Project for the Islanders

When he was producing earlier in his career, he looked like the type of player who could slot into a top-six role on a team that already had structure in place. Not a driver, but a connector. The kind of player who makes better use of better linemates.

Even with his early struggles in Toronto, after a period of limited production and inconsistent usage, he improved later in the season. Still, for the Islanders, he represents a bit of a bargain. And now that his price has come down, the risk shifts from “can he help us?” to “can we fix him?”

That’s a very Islander-type question. They’ve shown in the past they’re willing to bet on players whose value has dipped if they believe the environment will stabilize them. And Maccelli fits that category right now. He’s talented enough to be worth the gamble, uncertain enough to be available.

The Signing of Maccelli Really Doesn’t Come as a Surprise

So when I suggest that the Islanders have had interest for a long time, it’s less about a sudden trade idea and more about a player they already liked. Now that he finally became available, they jumped.

And that’s often how signings like these actually happen.
