Islanders and Barzal Agree to 8-Year Extension

The New York Islanders announced today that Mathew Barzal has agreed to terms on an eight-year contract extension. The deal is worth $9.15 million per season and it locks up the Islanders top playmaking centre for years to come.
Barzal is among the flashier players in the NHL and while his production hasn’t necessarily lineup with his obvious all-worldly skill, he was a player the team wanted to get committed to the organization and he had said publicly he wanted to stay. In fact, he noted that it was of interest to him to only ever play for one team and he wanted to retire as a member of the Islanders organization.
Lou Lamoriello had said he wanted to get Barzal locked up and that he was his biggest fan. Clearly, both sides are getting what they want here and the player will have the opportunity to show he’s worth the deal he was just signed to.
One thing to remember here is that, even if this might seen as high value by some fans, this contract should age well with the projected salary cap going up to $92 million in 2025-26. In six seasons with the team, Barzal has 311 points in 362 games, including 91 goals. He’s a two-time NHL All-Star selection.
