Insider: Yzerman Has Forced Himself Into Blockbuster Summer Trade

It apperas that Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman has created a situation where a big offseason trade is an absolute must now.

In his latest 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman touched on the press conference held by Steve Yzerman and Todd McLellan of the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, noting that it was clear Yzerman was mad. This was an obvious indication that the players weren’t good enough, and the GM is blaming the roster he had high hopes for as the season collapsed, ultimately leading to another missed playoffs.

Friedman then commented that, when it comes to player changes, one thing that stood out is how much has shifted over the past year. A year ago, there was criticism — even internally — that Yzerman didn’t do enough to help the team. This year, he made moves to support the group, and it still wasn’t enough. Almost like an ‘I told you so’ moment; you could sense the frustration, particularly directed at the players.

That frustration was obvious for McLellan, too, especially after the 8-1 loss to the Florida Panthers. McLellan was openly critical of his players, and it was clear why. Now the two are on the same page, and Yzerman offered a full vote of confidence in his coach at the press conference.

The message was simple: the roster, as constructed, isn’t good enough.

Yzmerman was done sugarcoating it. While some executives might point to injuries, bad luck, or timing, he didn’t go that route. He called out his team and now finds himself heading into a pivotal offseason.

Expect a Huge Trade by the Red Wings This Summer

Friedman believes this summer feels different. There’s a growing sense that a significant move — whether a major trade or another bold decision — is not just possible, but necessary. If it doesn’t happen, it would come as a surprise.

What’s interesting is that it felt like Yzerman was saying he’d already had doubts earlier in the season. Even when the Red Wings were in a playoff position, and there was a sense the team was in a good spot, there was a feeling that this was not the real compete level of team. Management appeared to recognize the gap and that improvements were going to be needed, even if the team squeezed in, which it didn’t.

That makes this offseason in Detroit especially intriguing. With the playoff drought continuing, expectations are rising — and the pressure to make a huge change is obvious.
