Insider Says Shane Wright Has a Team He’d Prefer a Trade To

Shane Wright could be traded this summer and if he is, it sounds like he knows where he would like to wind up.

According to Ben Kuzma of The Province, Shane Wright would like to land with the Vancouver Canucks. Assuming he has a say in things, Wright not only sees an opportunity in Vancouver, but he likes where the team is headed.

“Postmedia has learned Vancouver is Wright’s preferred destination because of what the club could become in a few years. Those who know him are convinced he might be the most misunderstood player in the NHL.

The Canucks are one of the teams that has been linked to the Shane Wright trade talks and it makes sense. They’re struggling to find players who are eager to go there, and they’re not in a great spot to contend. Wright wants to land in a place where he’ll be given a real shot to produce. The Canucks need scoring. Wright needs an opportunity and to prove himself. It sounds like a win/win.

Kuzma adds, “Wright has a year remaining on his entry-level deal at $886,666 US before becoming a restricted free agent. There is an incentive to produce and contribute to the rebuild, and if he does, the Canucks can lock him up.”

There have been talks between the Kraken and the Canucks. Donnie & Dhali’s Rick Dhaliwal shared that Vancouver called last week, but the asking price was ‘very high’. In 2024-25, Wright scored 19 goals and 44 points (his rookie year), but his production dropped in 2025-26, scoring just 12 goals and 27 points in 74 games.

Wright hasn’t been given much of an opportunity to play top-six minutes. Some would also argue he hasn’t earned them, falling well short of where he was projected to be at this point in his NHL career.
