Insider Identifies Canucks Top Trade Deadline Target & “Right Fit”
According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, the Vancouver Canucks have figured out what they need at this season’s NHL trade deadline some time ago. In a recent article identifying the Western Conference’s top deadline objectives and targets, the NHL insider claimed the Canucks aren’t just looking for a defenseman. The Canucks need a specific type of blueliner that can play with them beyond this season.
Seravalli notes the team wants a top-four puck-mover and writes:
“No surprise here. The Canucks have been pining for a more efficient puck-mover on the back end since training camp broke. They haven’t been able to find the right fit. Yes, Vancouver has played inconsistently this season, but they could be a handful in a playoff matchup if they can find the right gear. After spending so much last season on rentals, if adding now it wouldn’t be for just one playoff run.”
Despite all of the drama surrounding this Canucks team, Seravalli still believes the roster has a chance to make some noise in the postseason. However, it would require them to sort out their locker room issues and add the right piece on the back end. A puck-moving blueliner who can eat big minutes and help Quinn Hughes is critical.
Canucks Need to Lighten Hughes’ Load
Hughes won’t mind playing a ton. But, there is the concern of pushing him too much. The Canucks are risking that with every game they don’t find another defenseman. And it’s not just a problem for this season’s trade deadline. It’s an issue for the Canucks in seasons to come.
Filip Hronek is back on the ice and putting in the work in Abbotsford while the Canucks are on the road. He’ll make a huge difference when he returns. Still, the Canucks need more.
There is only so much punishment one player can take. And, Hughes is an easy target, in that he’s the most obvious one for opposing teams.
With Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller both not in their right mind dealing with all of the drama surrounding the team, targeting Hughes is the most efficient strategy for opponents. Without another top-minute defenseman to lighten that load, it’s a matter of time before Hughes suffers a setback.
It’s not clear if the Canucks have identified any specific players, but there will be names that shake loose and become available. The trick for Vancouver is not to fall apart until that player becomes available.
