Insider: Hurricanes Keep Searching for Goalie Despite Signing

Despite signing veteran Dustin Tokarski, the Carolina Hurricanes remain active in the goalie trade market, says an insider.

The Carolina Hurricanes still currently sit in a playoff spot this season, but their goaltending situation remains a concern. As injuries disrupt their plans to compete, even a recent signing hasn’t been enough to stop the organization from looking for a solution in the crease. Frederik Andersen is sidelined for 8-12 weeks following knee surgery. Pyotr Kochetkov is battling injuries of his own. The Hurricanes have turned to veteran Dustin Tokarski, signing him to an NHL deal to provide depth.

But, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, “My understanding is that the Canes intend to still keep on kicking tires on the goalie market, as they have for weeks now.”

LeBrun adds that the Hurricanes intend to still keep on kicking tires on the goalie market and while Tokarski’s signing reduces some immediate urgency, it doesn’t rule out the team making a move for a more reliable option.

The situation is further complicated by Andersen’s uncertain status. At 35, Andersen remains a high-caliber goaltender when healthy, but durability has become a significant issue. After appearing in only 16 games last season, he’s played just four this year. Even when he returns, Andersen will require time to regain his rhythm, leaving questions about the Hurricanes’ ability for a deep playoff run with him in goal.

Meanwhile, Kochetkov and Spencer Martin have not done enough as a tandem. Kochetkov’s potential is high, but a .893 save percentage likely isn’t enough. Betting solely on his development could be a risky move for a team with Stanley Cup aspirations.

What Goalie Options Are Available to the Hurricanes?

The Hurricanes may consider trade market options, potentially targeting veterans on expiring contracts from non-contenders. However, Carolina is known for its calculated approach, meaning any decision will depend on their position in the standings and Andersen’s recovery timeline. LeBrun explained: “With Pyotr Kochetkov back, and with the Tokarski signing, there’s not as much urgency for further action…”

As the trade deadline looms, the Hurricanes will need to decide whether patience or urgency is the right path forward. If someone becomes available that is an upgrade over everyone they have in their system, it sounds like the organization will push hard to make a pitch for that goaltender.
