Insider Details Trade Return if Red Wings Move Simon Edvinsson

If the Detroit Red Wings do trade Simon Edvisson, what’s the potential trade return? One insider listed the comparables.

Simon Edvinsson‘s future in Detroit remains uncertain, and the young defenceman reportedly still wants out. Both Elliotte Friedman and Pierre LeBrun are reporting that Edvinsson wants to be dealt, although there isn’t a clear frontrunner for his services.

According to Pierre LeBrun, Edvinsson, his agent J.P. Barry and Red Wings GM Shawn Horcoff met face to face three to four days ago. “They all laid their cards on the table, although I don’t get the sense any resolution came out of it.” Edvinsson told the Red Wings he’d prefer to be traded after a shaky summer of extension talks. “I would stop short of saying there was a formal trade request.”

Meanwhile, Elliotte Friedman reported in 32 Thoughts that he still believes Edvinsson hasn’t changed his mind.

If Detroit decides to move the blueliner, LeBrun said teams should look to three recent deals as the best comparables: the Mikhail Sergachev trade, the Noah Dobson trade and the more recent Bo Byram trade. Each involved a significant young top-four defenceman, which is the type of return and negotiation Detroit would be entering.

In the Sergachev trade, the Tampa Bay Lightning received J.J. Moser (defenseman), Conor Geekie (forward), a 2024 seventh-round draft pick (No. 199 overall), and a 2025 second-round draft pick. IN the Dobson deal, the New York Islanders received forward Emil Heineman, plus two 2025 first-round draft picks (Nos. 16 and 17 overall). The Bo Byram trade saw Buffalo receive defenseman Louis Crevier and a second-round pick (No. 45) in the 2026 draft, while Chicago added forward Jordan Greenway.

Detroit Still Wants to Sign Edvinsson

LeBrun noted that Detroit has not yet decided to trade Edvinsson, so the situation could still change. For now, the meeting between the player, his agent and management signals that the conversation is active, and the Red Wings will have to weigh their options as the pressure builds.

December 1 looms as its the deadline for an RFA to sign if he wants to play this season. Horcoff believes the Red Wings can get Edvisson signed and they’ve not given up hope that the two sides can come to an agreement.

That Edvisson hasn’t officially requested a trade is a positive sign.
