Hyman Says He Doesn’t Want to Leave Maple Leafs

Zach Hyman discussed a few things with TSN, among them what he hopes will be a future with the Maple Leafs.

The Toronto Maples will undoubtedly be a team that needs to sort its salary situation out for next season. With talk the cap might fall and with speculation both Tyson Barrie and Cody Ceci could be gone, where the Maple Leafs find the money to reshape their blue line behing Jake Muzzin and Morgan Rielly is uncertain. Some players will have to go.

Winger Zach Hyman hopes he’s not one of them.

Kristen Shilton of TSN posted comments from Toronto Maple Leafs forward this week. He touched on a number of topics, including what he hopes is a future with the team. He’s got a year left on his four-year, $9 million contract, and he’s likely not ignorant to the idea that many scribes are talking about the Maple Leafs and how they’ll make room next season.

Hyman knows he could be casualty, but he also understands how lucky he is to have another season on his current deal. Free agent this summer could have trouble getting the kind of money they believe they’re worth. In talking about his future, Hyman said, “First and foremost, I would love to stay in Toronto. It’s where I grew up. I want to be a Leaf for a long time.”

He added that he’s glad he’s glad he doesn’t need to think about signing with a team this offseason. He explains:

“In a way, with everything that’s happening now, I’m lucky that I have another year on my contract because everything will probably be sorted out by then with regards to the cap and whatnot and all those questions that nobody really has answers for right now. I would love to be a long-term Leaf and re-sign here. I want to be here and ultimately win a Stanley Cup.”

As for if he stays? Only time will tell. There are rumors the Maple Leafs will have to dangle a forward to help with the defense. That could include Hyman, but it could also include the likes of Kasperi Kapanen, Andreas Johnsson or someone else.
