Hurricanes Place Jake Gardiner on Waivers

The Carolina Hurricanes have placed Jake Gardiner on waivers Saturday. He is likely to clear based on his contract and higher salary.

As per a couple of reports on Saturday, defenseman Jake Gardiner has been placed on waivers by the Carolina Hurricanes. The intent is to assign him to the team’s taxi squad, which would provide the team with valuable cap flexibility while Gardiner remains out of the lineup.

Currently No. 4 or No. 5 offensive defenceman, injuries have taken a hit on his play but he’s definitely still serviceable. The problem is, he’s also expensive. A $4.05 million cap hit over the next three seasons, the Hurricanes are taking the bet that no one will claim him. The combination of his lower production and reduced ice time (dipped below 16 minutes a game) versus the money he’s being paid will likely be too rich for other teams looking to keep salary cap flexibility in an already tight marketplace.

But, there is always a chance a team like New Jersey, Philadelphia or Boston could scoop him up. Gardiner, 30, has registered seven assists with a plus-2 rating in 17 games with the Hurricanes this season.

If Gardiner clears, the Hurricanes will free up a prorated $1.075 million on the days he’s not on the active roster. If they are a buyer at this year’s deadline, which many believe they will be, this extra cap room could come in handy.
