How Gavin McKenna Is Protected by the Maple Leafs Core
Gavin McKenna joins a Maple Leafs team built on veteran leadership—but how much will that insulation help his development?
The Toronto Maple Leafs’ new young forward prospect, Gavin McKenna, might be in the perfect situation for his first real NHL chapter. It’s not just about talent; it’s about where he’s landing with his new team and who’s in the room.
From what Maple Leafs AGM Hayley Wickenheiser said, the big advantage is that he’s surrounded by a veteran leadership core. You’ve got the obvious superstar anchor in Auston Matthews, but it goes way beyond that. The Maple Leafs also have guys who’ve done the grind for years. There are seasoned defenders and leadership types like Jake McCabe and Morgan Rielly, who bring a ‘been there, done that’ energy. That kind of group can be huge for a young player because it doesn’t just help on the ice; it helps the whole way you think.
Being Insulated by a Group of Maple Leafs Mentors Matters
Insulation matters early. When you’re stepping into the NHL, everything hits at once. The speed, the detail, the physicality, and the expectations are all different. And mistakes get punished fast. If the team’s structure and the leadership are solid, a rookie doesn’t have to carry the same “prove it every night” pressure. McKenna can focus on learning the craft. That includes reading plays, picking the right moments, managing matchups, and figuring out how to be effective without overthinking.
Wickenheiser’s point really reinforces this. With that veteran group around him, McKenna can hopefully just go out and play his game without feeling like he has to be perfect every single night. That’s the difference between a young player trying to “survive” the league versus one adapting to it. If he’s comfortable, he’ll take the right risks, work through mistakes, and keep building. But if he’s constantly tense, he’ll second-guess himself, and that’s when development can slow down.

If Insulating McKenna Is Important, How Will the Maple Leafs Do It?
So how do you insulate him in a practical way? You keep his role clear and manageable early. Let him lean on veterans for communication and positioning. Give him predictable responsibilities while he learns the Maple Leafs’ pace and decision-making.
They also don’t overreact to his learning curve. Let him get his reps, let him adjust, and let the core do some of the heavy lifting on structure and confidence. If McKenna gets that kind of “support net” around him, he could end up playing with a lot more freedom than people expect. That’s when you really see young players take off.
