“He’ll Never Play Another Game in Toronto”: Lying Reaches New Level After Matthews Hit
It’s clear that the top players on the Toronto Maple Leafs are lying about what they saw with the Matthews hit. It this grounds to move on?
The Toronto Maple Leafs are either lying directly to the fans and the media about the Auston Matthews hit, or they’re lying to themselves. Either way, someone isn’t being honest about what went down when the captain was taken out, and it hints at a systemic issue in Toronto. It’s one that will likely to lead to a major player not returning.
The question is, who?
The Sid Seixeiro Show (Sid) called out both Morgan Rielly and William Nylander for lying directly to the media. Both players said they “didn’t see” exactly what transpired on the hit and had they, might have reacted differently. Rielly took some ownership of the play, saying it was on him to step up and he didn’t. Nylander didn’t seem to do much more than deflect responsibility.
Meanwhile, comments on Seixeiro’s post garnered an interesting reaction from some fans. One fan wrote, “He’ll never play another game in Toronto.” It wasn’t clear who the fan was talking about. It was mostly likely Auston Matthews, suggesting he’ll be so frustrated by the lack of response he’ll want out.

However, others took aim at Matthews himself. “Would Matthew stick up for any of them, hell no!!!” said one fan. Another wrote, “Unpopular opinion, Matthews wouldn’t have helped them either. Hard truth.” One more added, “Before condemning the players that did nothing, maybe you should consider all the times Matthews did the same. The problem is systemic. The corporate team, players & mgmt, don’t care for each other.”
There Is A Real Problem in Toronto
What’s got most fans upset isn’t the hit as much as the reaction to the hit. And, that’s not even just the reaction on the ice. Star players seem to be making excuses and lying about what they saw so as not to take the heat for their lack of response.
Seixeiro showed in his video that both Rielly and Nylander were looking right at the play when it happened. To say they didn’t see it isn’t true.
This could create a dilemma for the Maple Leafs. Do you keep players around who not only don’t stand up when required, but then shift the blame when it comes time to take some responsibility? Jeff Marek asked, “Are you a club or are you a team?” David Pagnotta said this doesn’t feel like a team, and said there’s some kind of disconnect. Even if they didn’t see anything, you get involved first and ask questions later.
