Gustav Nyquist Traded To San Jose Sharks

On Sunday evening, the Detroit Red Wings made a late-night move by sending forward Gustav Nyquist to the San Jose Sharks. The return was a 2nd round pick in 2019 and a conditional third in 2020. Detroit retained 30% of Nyquist’s salary in the deal.

Detroit reached out to Nyquist and asked him to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate to a move to San Jose. He agreed and within minutes, was traded to the West Coast where he’ll join a San Jose team who is one of the favorites in the Western Conference to make a run in this year’s playoff race.
The Sharks weren’t necessarily a favorite to land Nyquist but there was some reported interest. On Sunday evening, after seeing him play the Sharks, Doug Wilson had decided the goal and eight shots Nyquist posted against them was enough to make an offer. Part of that offer is that if the Sharks reach the Stanley Cup Final this season or re-sign Nyquist, the 2020 pick will become a second-round selection.
Nyquist, 29, now has 16 goals and 49 points on the season. He is likely to set a new career-high for production. His previous high was 54 points that he posted back in 2014-15. The expectation at this point is that Nyquist will be a rental but with the Sharks, you never know. They grabbed Evander Kane at last year’s deadline and promptly signed him to a big-time extension. Nyquist is still young and the Sharks are aging. It might be a good fit if they are willing to meet the rumored $5.5 million per season he’s expected to want in free agency.
Nyquist signals the fact that the Red Wings have settled in on their rebuild. They traded defenseman Nick Jensen earlier in the week and all eyes will be on goaltender Jimmy Howard who is another strong candidate to be moved before Monday’s trade deadline comes and goes.
