The Vegas Golden Knights moved a bit of salary on Friday in a trade that sends forward Cody Eakin to the Winnipeg Jets.
Winnipeg trades a conditional 2021 4th-round pick to Vegas for Eakin, a pending UFA. Coming back is a 4th-round pick that becomes a 3rd if Winnipeg makes the playoffs or re-signs Eakin.
Eakin is on the final season of a four-year $15.4 million deal.
Eakin, 28, has shown he can perform offensively and has carved out a nice NHL career for himself. The 2018-19 season saw him score 22 goals and 41 points for the Golden Knights. However, this year he’s had trouble producing at the same level as his four goals and ten points, plus the fact he’s a pending free agent saw his value drop.
The Jets have assigned Andrei Chibisov to the minor leagues, likely to make room on the roster for Eakin and his cap hit.
Eakin will forever be tied to the Golden Knights organization as he took the first ever face-off in Vegas history and registered the first ever assist too.
