Another free agent goaltender has come off the board early on Saturday. Thomas Greiss has signed a two-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings at an annual average salary of $3.6 million. The structure of Greiss’ deal is $2.8 million in Year 1 and $4.4 million in year two.

Greiss might have been the best netminder left on the board after a string of goalies were signed on day one. He’s a strong backstop who was under-shadowed as part of a trio with the New York Islanders and he has playoff experience and good work ethic. In heading to Detroit, he’s landed in a place that offers no better opportunity for a starter to get in a ton of games.

Interestingly, his numbers compared to Jacob Markstrom in 2019 are quite similar. Greiss played in 31 games and had .913% and 2.74GAA. Markström played in 43 games and had a .918% and 2.75GAA.

Detroit now has $22.438 million in projected cap space with a roster of 18 (10F-6D-2G). They have pending RFAs to sign including: forwards Bertuzzi, Mantha, and Timashov.
