Focused Adam Fox Noncommittal About His Future with Rangers

“I’m just trying to focus on this year right now and play each game,” Adam Fox said when asked about his future with the Rangers.

Defenseman Adam Fox addressed questions about his future with the New York Rangers following the team’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday, and what he said has some people wondering about what’s coming.

With the Rangers undergoing a significant “retool” under GM Chris Drury, including the recent trade of Artemi Panarin to the Los Angeles Kings, Fox was asked directly whether he sees himself staying through those changes. He avoided answering the question.

“I’m just trying to focus on this year right now and play each game,” Fox said. “I think that’s a conversation when we’re done playing games.”

While that sounds very much like he’s not willing to paint himself into a corner by saying one way or another what he wants to do, it’s key to remember that Fox went out of his way to become a Ranger. Making the decision to move on, if that’s what he ultimately does, won’t come easy. He has a no-move clause in his contract through next season, and a 16-team no-trade clause for the two seasons after that. Still, every relationship eventually ends. Is this one on the brink?

Adam Fox Unhappy with the Way Things Are Going

He admitted the changes have been difficult. “It’s not fun to hear. I mean, we’re competitive people in here,” Fox said. “We want to win, and you lose a guy like [Artemi Panarin] and you don’t know what else could happen obviously. We put ourselves in this position, and that’s what happens. Yeah, it obviously, you know, sucks, when something like that happens.”

Fox still has three years remaining on his contract, but his comments have fueled speculation about the organization’s direction as the season winds down.
