Eastern Conference Playoff Team Internally Discussing Darnell Nurse Trade
The Philadelphia Flyers could emerge as a surprising destination for Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse this offseason.
According to Philadelphia insider Anthony SanFilippo, there have been internal conversations within the Flyers organization regarding the possibility of acquiring Nurse. While SanFilippo noted that Philadelphia has not yet engaged Edmonton in formal trade discussions, the idea of bringing in the veteran blueliner has apparently been discussed behind the scenes.
The report comes at an interesting time for both organizations.
Flyers Looking for Blue-Line Upgrades
Philadelphia’s prospect pipeline on defense remains promising, but much of that talent is still years away from making a significant NHL impact. Oliver Bonk is viewed as an important piece of the future, while names like Spencer Gill, Hunter McDonald, and Ty Murchison continue to develop.

However, if the Flyers intend to take another step forward under head coach Rick Tocchet, adding established help on the back end could become a priority.
With uncertainty surrounding Rasmus Ristolainen’s future and a need for more size and physicality on the blue line, Nurse represents the type of veteran presence Philadelphia may be seeking.
Nurse Open to Certain Destinations
SanFilippo also reported that Nurse, who holds a full no-trade clause through next season, has informed the Oilers there are several teams he would currently approve a trade to. While it remains unclear exactly which clubs are on that list, one source indicated that Philadelphia would be an acceptable destination for the 31-year-old defenseman.
That alone makes the possibility worth monitoring.
Unlike many teams around the league, the Flyers have the financial flexibility to absorb Nurse’s contract. Philadelphia currently possesses roughly $37 million in cap space, meaning they could theoretically take on his entire $9.25 million cap hit without requiring Edmonton to retain salary.
That flexibility could simplify negotiations and potentially lower the acquisition cost for the Flyers.
Could Owen Tippett Enter the Conversation?
One intriguing wrinkle is the possibility of forward Owen Tippett becoming part of any discussions.
Tippett’s name has surfaced in rumors involving Edmonton in recent weeks, with reports suggesting the Oilers have interest in the 26-year-old winger. The former 28-goal scorer would provide Edmonton with much-needed speed and secondary scoring while fitting the age range of the team’s core.
A framework involving Nurse and Tippett would certainly be complicated. Philadelphia would likely require additional assets from Edmonton given Tippett’s age and offensive upside, while the Oilers would need to determine whether moving a top-four defenseman is worth strengthening their forward group.
Still, it presents an interesting “hockey trade” scenario rather than a simple salary dump.
Cap Growth Could Change Perception of Nurse’s Contract
Nurse’s $9.25 million cap hit has long been a topic of debate, but with the salary cap expected to rise substantially over the next several seasons, contracts that currently appear expensive may become easier to manage.
Philadelphia appears to recognize that reality.
At this stage, no trade talks have occurred between the two teams, but internal discussions alone suggest the Flyers are at least exploring the possibility.
Whether those conversations eventually lead to a serious pursuit remains to be seen, but Philadelphia may be one of the few teams capable of giving Edmonton a realistic path to moving one of its biggest contracts.
