Flames Trade Coleman, Maatta to Wild for Jake Middleton

Blake Coleman and Olli Maatta are being traded to the Minnesota Wild from the Calgary Flames for Jake Middleton and picks.

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, “Hearing Jake Middleton has been traded by the Wild to Calgary.” He adds, “Coleman and Maatta return.” Elliotte Friedman has confirmed the deal, noting that Calgary is also getting picks back as part of the trade. The picks are a 2nd in 2029, a 3rd in 2027, and a 4th in 2028.

Emily Kaplan of ESPN notes that the Flames are retaining 50 % of Blake Coleman’s salary.

Middleton, a physical, shutdown-minded defenseman, has anchored Minnesota’s top pairing alongside Jonas Brodin in recent seasons, logging heavy minutes as one of the league’s more reliable defensive presences. For Calgary, he’d add a legitimate top-four piece to a blue line. With Kevin Bahl as their top left-side defenseman, it was clear the Flames needed an upgrade. Middleton’s no-move became a modified no-trade yesterday.

In return, Minnesota gets Blake Coleman, a gritty, playoff-tested forward, and Olli Maatta, a defensive defenseman with two years left on his deal. There was talk that Coleman might be on the move dating back to last season. Ultimately, he was one of the few players Calgary held onto.

For Minnesota, this deal might be as much about not waiting on Dylan Larkin as anything else. Was Coleman a Plan B?
