Flames Squash Rumors: Rasmus Andersson Off the Trade Market

It is being reported the Calgary Flames have told other teams that they are not trading defenseman Rasmus Andersson, squashing any rumors.

Despite a report to the contrary this past week, the Calgary Flames have made it clear that defenseman Rasmus Andersson is not available for trade. As per TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun, the Flames have told teams their defenseman is not on the market as he’s become a cornerstone of their roster.

“The Flames have no interest in trading him, point blank,” LeBrun stated. Even as a hot commodity and a player who will likely be a target of several contending GMs, the Flames are committed to keeping the 27-year-old defenseman in Calgary. Demand might be high, but general manager Craig Conroy isn’t concerned about what the Flames might be acquiring a trade. It’s more about what they’d be giving up.

If The Flames Weren’t Contending, It Might Be Different

The Flames might have considered moving Andersson if not for the successful but unexpected season they are having. They’re in the playoff conversation mix, and he’s been a critical part of that success. Trading him all but removes the team’s chances of playing in the postseason and getting some of their younger players valuable playoff experience.

Andersson is a leader who the Flames hold in high regard. Drafted by the Flames in 2015, he has developed into a steady top-four blueliner. He’s solid both on the offensive and defensive end. With 25 points in 40 games this season, Andersson can be an integral piece to any postseason run.

Calgary’s decision to retain Andersson means they see him as important as they build around a core group of players, both younger and more experienced. If they had decided to completely rebuild or retool, he might be on the move. But, as a team who might not be far away from contention, he’s more valuable on the team than off of it. Extending Andersson’s contract next summer, when eligible, appears to be a priority for the team.

And, if the team were to trade him, they’d immediately be looking to replace him. They could get a nice haul at the deadline, but there’s no guarantee they won’t spend more trying to find the guy they wished they’d never moved.
