Predators’ Top-Six Forward No Longer an Option for Maple Leafs

Reports suggest Maple Leafs fans should remove one of the Nashville Predators’ top-six forwards from the potential trade candidate list.

It’s not clear how likely a Filip Forsberg and Toronto Maple Leafs connection was, but if the Leafs had any interest in the top-six winger from the Nashville Predators, it’s probably best to remove his name from the list of potential trade candidates for GM Kyle Dubas.

The Predators are officially sellers this season and there are a few names being tossed out there as assets the team might move. Elliotte Friedman reports in his latest 31 Thoughts column that Forsberg was in the mix as a player the Leafs might have been looking at. He adds that Toronto is actively trying to find the right fit and he believes the Maple Leafs will make a move within the next 14 days.

Friedman suggests that minimizing the impact any quarantine could have on a trade is important and this would certainly be a factor if the Leafs were to make a deal for one of the Predators top players. Names like Mattias Ekholm, Forsberg, Mikael Granlund and others have been linked in trade talks.

Time to Remove Forsberg From That List

How the Maple Leafs were going to make a deal for Forsberg work was an entirely different set of issues. He’s a $6 million player for this and next season and while he’d be a huge add for Toronto, the Leafs have just over $100K in cap space and any deal would have to include a player going back to Nashville, retained salary and a possible younger asset.

None of that may matter now.

Predators GM David Poile said in a recent interview expects he’ll not move the forward. He noted, “Forsberg isn’t “going to be a guy that we have interest in trading any time soon.”

Further to that, The Fourth Period noted that several teams have checked in on Forsberg’s availability — including the Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes and Montreal Canadiens. But, they say Forsberg isn’t likely going anywhere this season. Instead, “talks could be revisited in the future – or whenever a team peaks Poile’s interest.”
