Emotional Patrick Roy Let’s Islanders Players Have It After Game
New York Islanders head coach Patrick Roy was unhappy with his team’s third-period performance on Thursday and told his players about it.
New York Islanders head coach Patrick Roy was not thrilled with his team’s third-period effort after the Islanders almost lost 5-1 to the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night. He expressed his emotions by saying that he might have done something different if he had been playing goalie for the Islanders last night.
“I guess times has changed, because in my days, if my team would have done that to me, I will break a stick in that room, Roy said. “I’ll be very upset to see my team playing like this in front of me.”
He might have broken a stick in the locker room, we are not sure. We know what he did as the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche during his first tenure as a head coach in the NHL. Who could forget the incident in 2013 when he shoved the glass as the head coach of the Avalanche toward then Anaheim Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau?
Roy might have matured slightly since then, but he is still an emotional figure. You can clearly see the Islanders’ coach getting sick and tired of his players continuously blowing leads in the third period. This goes back to last season when the Islanders blew the most third-period leads even before Roy took over from Lane Lambert.
However, the stats are troubling, and Roy let his team have it after the win on Thursday as the Islanders hung on to win by a score of 5-4. It was 5-2 late into the game before Tyler Bertuzzi scored two goals to cut the deficit to one.
The Islanders Need to Find Solutions Internally
The Islanders have allowed 20 third-period goals in the nine games (4-4-4) where they’ve blown a third-period lead.
Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet said on his latest 32 Thoughts Podcast:
“I don’t know what’s going on with the Islanders this year in the 3rd period right now, they could be winning 36-0 and if I bet, I’m not sure I bet on them. … I don’t know what’s going on with them in the 3rd periods.”

Patrick Roy praised his goaltender after the game but he has to know that Ilya Sorokin’s stats didn’t reflect his potential. Roy also noted that Sorokin wouldn’t have approached the game the way he did in his own playing days. He made it clear to the team that the performance fell short of his standards as both a player and coach.
Roy noted:
“Ilya is a gentleman. He’s a first class person, so but that was that was unacceptable. We didn’t compete, we didn’t battle in front of the net in the last eight minutes. That’s unacceptable. We talked about it this morning too be stronger. Our goalie deserve more respect than this from ourself.”
Patrick Roy expects more from his team because he expects more from himself. Let’s see how the Islanders respond to his actions.
