Ekman-Larsson Trade Talks Intensify, Oilers Out

As per a report by TSN’s Darren Dreger on Thursday, talks are intensifying that might see defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson. The Oilers are out.

As per a report by TSN’s Darren Dreger on Thursday, talks are intensifying that might see defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson moved in a deal that will clear cap space for the Arizona Coyotes.

Dreger notes: “Things are believed to be intensifying in Arizona on the OEL front, however, unless something changes, the Oilers have been told they’re not on the short list of teams OEL will waive his trade protection to go to.”

So, the Oilers are out. Who does that leave?

** Update: According to Elliotte Friedman, “Ekman-Larsson’s list (for now) is believed to include BOS & VAN. Things can always change.”

The Calgary Flames were rumored to have reached out to the Coyotes and the Boston Bruins are rumored to be interested realizing that they’re likely going to lose Torey Krug in free agency. While the Flames won’t need to do much in terms of their cap to fit Ekman-Larsson in, the same can’t be said for the Bruins who are tight up against things, even with Krug on the way out.

These would be two very different trades for the Coyotes. In one case, Calgary could send draft picks and prospects with Arizona needing to take little salary back. If doing a deal with the Bruins, salary is most certainly coming to the desert. Dreger noted on TSN that the ask was a young d-man and a 1st RD pick.

Mixed Reaction in Edmonton

Some fans are elated to hear that Ekman-Larsson might be refusing to waive his no-move clause for the Oilers. Those fans are worried that a locked-in over $8 million defenseman is not what the Oilers need right now.

Others have said that the Oilers should be worried. That if they have Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl and players still don’t want to come there, that’s not a good sign. The reality is, it’s probably a lot less about the players on the roster and more about the destination. There are only a handful of places with weather like Arizona.
