Edmonton’s Rogers Place Suffers Damage During Storm
Just as the city and arena were prepping to host half of the 24 teams for the NHL play-in games, Rogers Place in Edmonton suffered extensive damage thanks to a storm that ripped through the area.
The timing couldn’t be worse. As the city of Edmonton looks to host half of the 24 NHL teams preparing to start hockey games on August 1, the arena that will play host to those games looks to have suffered extensive damage.
Rogers Place, which is where the Oilers play and the venue that will play host to the Western Conference teams in the play-in games, suffered major roof damage during a storm Thursday evening. Part of the roof tore and the foyer area flooded with water. You can see the video below:
Rogers Place posted updates on the damage and wrote the following:
A significant storm came through #yeg earlier this evening. As a result, #RogersPlace has suffered some water damage to the terminus of Ford Hall, along with some smaller leaks in other parts of the building.
We are assessing the damage & at this time are confident that it will not hamper our planning & preparation & we will be ready to host the return of @NHL hockey as hub city. We will share more information as it becomes available.
Darren Dreger of TSN also reports:
Horrendous storm in Edmonton. Video shows water pouring into the entrance at Rogers Place, however, the arena isn’t damaged according to those on the scene. The NHL isn’t concerned at the moment. Oilers are expected to issue a statement with more detail.
At this point, the Oilers have not issued a statement.
This Is Bad, But Not Catastrophic News
The city of Edmonton was hit with tornado warnings as storms raged through the area. Why the arena suffered damage is unclear but it is assumed the venue will look into what happened and ensure that it doesn’t happen again. Obviously, the venue has less than two weeks to get things rolling as teams were slated to arrive in the city on July 26 in preparation for games on August 1.
When the arena gets the repairs done, and the city will likely make it a priority, games should be good to go.
