Edmonton Oilers Place Tyler Ennis on Waivers

The Edmonton Oilers have placed veteran forward Tyler Ennis on waivers in a somewhat surprising move by the franchise.

Whether it’s because of his early season struggles or because the Edmonton Oilers want to make some moves on the roster that require some cap space in which to do so, forward Tyler Ennis has been placed on waivers today. Ennis, 31, has been held pointless in four contests with the Oilers this season. He’s posted just two shots and averaged 9:47 in ice time.

Ennis was a trade deadline acquisition for the Oilers last season and was offered a low-cost extension this offseason after producing decent results in a short window of time with the team. He’s a depth forward on the Oilers roster, but the hope was that he could provide a few options up and down the lineup. Should he clear waivers, it is likely he will placed on the Oilers taxi squad and speculation is the Oilers will make a corresponding move elsewhere on the roster.

That said, it is possible he doesn’t clear waivers as he’s on a one-year, $1 million deal and has a history with a number of NHL teams. The Toronto Maple Leafs are rumored to be looking for a forward and there might be a fit there as he’s got history with the organization and was a popular player there over the course of 51 games.

A Bit of a Surprise in Edmonton

The immediate reaction in Edmonton and by Oilers fans seems to be one of surprise. Most will admit that Ennis has had a slow start, but that he’s hit the waiver wire and the team would risk losing him is a bit of a shock. Perhaps the Oilers have their eyes on a different forward.

Joakim Nygard could come back into the fold or Gaetan Haas might be close to a return. Fans are also a bit upset that a player like Alex Chiasson wasn’t waived. He too has struggled and is making more per season. If he were to be claimed, it could offer the Oilers some cap relief that Ennis’ deal does not.
