Edmonton Oilers Trade Ryan Strome to Rangers For Ryan Spooner

In a trade that has to be considered a throwing of the arms in the air for both the Rangers and Oilers, the Edmonton Oilers have moved Ryan Strome to the New York Rangers for Ryan Spooner.

In a trade that has to be considered a throwing of the arms in the air for both the Rangers and Oilers, the Edmonton Oilers have moved Ryan Strome to the New York Rangers for Ryan Spooner. Both centers have struggled this season and both GM’s are hoping a change of scenery will spark their respective productions.

In Edmonton, Strome had only one goal and one assist in 18 games. He originally joined the Oilers in the summer of 2017 when Edmonton traded Jordan Eberle to the New York Islanders. To say that Oilers fans will be happy tracing this trade back to the fact Eberle was now moved for Spooner will not earn general manager Peter Chiarelli any brownie points. That said, if Spooner can come in and produce more than the nothing production Strome was offering, other fans will be happy.

Over his career as an Oiler, Strome had only 36 points in 100 games.

Spooner has struggled as well but not nearly as much as Strome. Spooner wound up in New York thanks to the Rick Nash trade that sent Nash to the Boston Bruins. A 40 point player in Boston, Spooner never quite put things together in New York but he did score at much higher point-per-game pace prior to this season, with 41 points in 59 games, good for .69 points per game on average. Still, this season, Spooner failed to grab a top-six role as a center, scoring only once and adding one assist in 16 games.

Chiarelli knew Spooner well having originally drafted him when he was with the Bruins.

The New York Rangers have agreed to retain $900K in salary, making this an even trade in terms of salary cap hit to the team but Spooner does have one more season after this one on his contract, making him an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2019-20 season.
