Oilers Working Out Options on Three Potential Trade Targets

The Edmonton Oilers are reportedly working out logistics of three potential targets: Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Petr Mrazek and Jacob Markstrom.

The Edmonton Oilers are looking to fill a couple of needs via trade or free agency this offseason and they’ve apparently got their eyes on some interesting targets. One option could be Edmonton’s Plan B, while the other two would require significant changes both to their roster and their salary cap structure to make work.

As per TSN’s Darren Dreger, during a recent episode of Insider Trading the hockey insider has confirmed rumors that the Edmonton Oilers are actively pursuing the option of trading for defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Dreger notes that discussions have are merely in the preliminary stages with the Arizona Coyotes and there are certainly questions about cap space, but the interest is serious from Edmonton’s perspective and they are in the mix.

From what Dreger has learned, the Oilers are trying to work through different scenarios to make a trade a real possibility and there’s keen interest to grab a proven top-pair blueliner. Obviously, Ekman-Larsson has to waive a full No-Movement Clause to join the Oilers but there’s some speculation he may be willing to do so.

It does sound like the Oilers aren’t the only interested organization. A number of teams have also expressed interest and among them are the Boston Bruins who are likely to lose Torey Krug to free agency.

Oilers Also Interested in Mrazek and Markstrom

Pierre LeBrun has mentioned that the Oilers are also interested in upgrading their goaltending and perhaps have kicked tires on Petr Mrazek as a Plan B from the Carolina Hurricanes. He has one season remaining on a contract that will pay him $3.125 million next season. LeBrun points to GM Ken Holland’s familiarity with the goaltender from their days together in Detroit.

He also mentions the Oilers are keeping their eyes on what happens in Vancouver between the Canucks and netminder Jacob Markstrom.

One would have to assume if Markstrom becomes a real option out of Vancouver, a trade for his rights may become a real possibility as the Canucks would prefer to get something out of a trade versus letting Markstrom walk for nothing.
